Niger
These countries represent an important region for the presence and diffusion of the Tijaniyya path in West Africa. The establishment of the tariqa in this region owes much to the efforts of major scholarly and spiritual figures, as well as to influential religious leaders and statesmen who contributed to its spread and consolidation within local societies.
Among the most prominent figures is Sidi El-Hajj Omar Fouti Tall, the great Senegalese leader whose spiritual and political influence played a significant role in expanding the path across large areas of the Sahel. Later on, several disciples of Sidi Malik Sy and of the gnostic Sidi Ibrahim Niass also contributed to strengthening and transmitting the tariqa throughout these countries.
Mauritanian scholars also played a significant role in this expansion. Among them was the distinguished scholar Sidi Ahmed Hammahullah al-Tichiti al-Tijani (1883–1943), one of the major figures of the path in the Saharan region between Mauritania, Mali, and Senegal. A descendant of the prophetic lineage through Hasan and Idris, he received the path through Sidi Mohamed ibn al-Akhdar, who was connected to the renowned master Sidi Tahir Boutiba al-Tlemceni, one of the eminent companions of Sīdī Aḥmad al-Tijānī.
Known for his strong stance against French colonial rule, Sidi Ahmed Hammahullah was exiled several times before passing away in France in 1943. His spiritual influence remains particularly strong in Burkina Faso, where his legacy continues to inspire many disciples.
