Nigeria

Nigeria is today one of the major countries of the Tijaniyya path in Africa. The tariqa experienced remarkable expansion there largely thanks to the influence of the great gnostic Sidi Ibrahim Niass, whose teachings profoundly shaped the religious life of many communities.

Several of his disciples became major spiritual leaders in their own right, gathering hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of followers. Among the well-known figures associated with this expansion is Sidi Bauchi, who contributed significantly to the organization and growth of the path in different parts of Nigeria.

Certain cities such as Kano occupy a special place within this intellectual and spiritual landscape. These cities have long maintained strong connections with the major centers of Islamic scholarship, particularly Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Many Nigerian scholars studied there and contributed to developing a strong scholarly tradition centered on the teaching of Arabic and Islamic sciences.
