The spiritual meaning of a famous statement in the Tijani tradition
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad, the noblest of God’s creation, and upon his family and companions.
Within the Tijani Sufi tradition (Tariqa Tijaniyya), one expression has been widely quoted for generations:
“The Zawiya stands by the command of God.”(الزاوية أمرها قائم بالله)
This short statement carries profound spiritual and historical meaning. It refers especially to the Great Tijani Zawiya of Fez, but its significance extends far beyond a single place.
To understand its true meaning, it is essential to examine how the great scholars of the Tijani path interpreted it.
The Zawiya of Fez and Its Spiritual Foundation
The statement affirms that the Great Tijani Zawiya in Fez stands upon the guidance of Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and will continue to do so until the end of time.
The renowned Tijani scholar Sidi Ahmad Skirej commented on this expression in the margin of his copy of the book Al-Ifada al-Ahmadiyya li-Murid al-Sa‘ada al-Abadiyya. He explained that the statement should not be understood narrowly.
Rather, it should be understood in a general sense.
According to him, this meaning applies not only to the Zawiya of Fez but also to all Tijani zawiyas across the world that are affiliated with the spiritual authority of the Tijani order.
As he observed, this reality has been witnessed both by ordinary followers and by those deeply knowledgeable in the path.

“The Zawiya stands by the command of God.”
This response is sometimes used to suggest that no effort, reform, or correction is necessary.
But such an interpretation does not reflect how the great scholars of the Tijani tradition understood the phrase.
Knowledge and Depth of Understanding
The interpretation of such statements often depends on the depth of knowledge of the person who hears them.
As the Qur’an states:
“Above every possessor of knowledge is one more knowing.”(Qur’an 12:76)
A learned scholar may perceive meanings and responsibilities in a statement that others might overlook.
Thus, the phrase “The Zawiya stands by the command of God” should not be reduced to a simplistic or passive interpretation.
It Is Not a Call to Passivity

Whenever they observed excesses, disagreements, or problematic behavior among followers, they did not ignore them.
